Everything About Uric Acid Safety, Symptoms & Medication

What is Uric Acid?

Uric acid is a chemical compound composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. It is created by our body naturally through the natural breakdown of our body’s cells as well as from the food that we eat. Our kidneys are the main organs that help filter out uric acid from our body through the process also known as urination.

Safety Levels and Ranges

While it may vary depending on the person and his/her hormonal patterns, the normal accepted uric acid levels are 2.4-6.0 mg/dL (female) and 3.4-7.0 mg/dL (male). When you get over this limit, a symptom called hyperuricemia

Maintaining a healthy level and range for uric acid is very important. When the uric acid level in your body rises above 7 mg/dL, this is where complications start to occur. Health problems such as kidney stones and gout (accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, especially in your toes and fingers), may occur.

Dangers of High Uric Acid Levels

Like everything else, too much of something can be harmful. And the dangers of high uric acid levels in the body is well-documented too. If there is too much build-up of uric acid in your body and your kidneys are not able to filter them out, uric acid levels in your body start to rise. High levels of uric acid in the blood should be avoided at all costs because it can lead to a condition also known as gout where uric acid crystals start to accumulate in your joints.

High uric acid levels in the body also cause the condition known as renal calculi or “kidney stones”. These stones are formed by calcium salts deposited on an organic matrix of oxalate or urate. According to Burini (2012),the kidney stones and their formation “occurs in the glomerular filtrate in acid (oxalate or urate) or alkaline (carbonates and phosphates) pH in the presence of high calciuria (hyperparathyroidism or bone demineralization). They are usually formed and then dissolved, but under abnormal pH variation or filtrate concentration conditions, they may remain until excretion.”

High uric acids can cause these painful conditions and even make urinating a problem for some people.

7 Symptoms to Watch Out

High uric acid level often shows symptoms such as the following:

  1. Growing pain in the joints, especially in the fingers and big toe area
  2. Redness and tenderness in the joints
  3. Inflammation of the joints
  4. Joints feeling “hot”
  5. Formation of “tophi” which are crystallized uric acid lumps under the skin
  6. Pain in the abdomen and back (usually a sign of kidney stones)
  7. Blood in the urine

The prevalence of high uric acid has a closely-interdependent relationship with other metabolic disorders and currently used drugs have side effects as well as a contraindication in some cases – with liver, kidney injury, or other conditions frequently limiting their clinic application. Because of that, natural products that can help ease high uric acid is something that you might want to take a look at.
