What is Uric Acid?
Uric acid is a chemical compound composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. It is created by our body naturally through the natural breakdown of our body’s cells as well as from the food that we eat. Our kidneys are the main organs that help filter out uric acid out of our body through the process also known as urination.
Safety Levels and Ranges for Uric Acid
While it may vary depending on the person and his/her hormonal patterns, the normal accepted uric acid levels are 2.4-6.0 mg/dL (female) and 3.4-7.0 mg/dL (male). When you get over this limit, a symptom called hyperuricemia Like everything else, too much of something can be harmful. And the dangers of high uric acid levels in the body is well-documented too. If there is too much build-up of uric acid in your body and your kidneys are not able to filter them out, uric acid levels in your body start to rise. High levels of uric acid in the blood should be avoided at all costs because it can lead to a condition also known as gout where uric acid crystals start to accumulate in your joints. High uric acid levels in the body also cause the condition known as renal calculi or “kidney stones”. These stones are formed by calcium salts deposited on an organic matrix of oxalate or urate. According to Burini (2012),the kidney stones and their formation “occurs in the glomerular filtrate in acid (oxalate or urate) or alkaline (carbonates and phosphates) pH in the presence of high calciuria (hyperparathyroidism or bone demineralization). They are usually formed and then dissolved, but under abnormal pH variation or filtrate concentration conditions, they may remain until excretion.” High uric acids can cause these painful conditions and even make urinating a problem for some people. High uric acid level often shows symptoms such as the following: The prevalence of high uric acid has a closely-interdependent relationship with other metabolic disorders and currently used drugs have side effects as well as a contraindication in some cases – with liver, kidney injury, or other conditions frequently limiting their clinic application.
